Our mission is to promote, develop and support library and information services and to make available to the public the best possible facilities and services for obtaining information and knowledge, to stimulate the search for new ideas, and provide opportunity for acquaintance with the past and offer the pleasure to be found in books.
History of the Blackfalds Public Library
The Blackfalds Public Library was first located in a small building located on the school grounds. For a time after that the library was located in the basement of the old town office, under the water tower. When the new town office was built, they added a library that was approximately 600 sq. feet. In 1991 the library moved to its current location of 1800 sq. feet in a newly renovated location on Main Street. Once again, however, the library is in need of moving as we have outgrown the space in our current location.
The Library is legislated by the Alberta Libraries Act as a non-profit organization. In September 1994, we received Notification of Registration from Revenue Canada as a registered charity. This provides us with the opportunity of receiving donations and, in return, providing the donor with a tax-deductible receipt.
Libraries in Alberta find themselves in a period of transition as the information age is upon us. The Blackfalds Public Library is a small rural library trying to stay current with the standards of today. This is a challenging job for both the Provincial and Municipal Governments and the Library Boards in our province and around the country.
Friends of the Library
The Society of the Friends of the Blackfalds Public Library is being formed to help raise money to build the new library. We are looking for interested people to join and help make this endeavor a reality. Please contact the staff at the library if you are interested in joining. We currently have Blackfalds Public Library pins available for purchase at the library.
